This position works Sunday-Thursday: Sunday 0900-1730 & Monday-Thursday 1200-2030. On call is required 7 days on, 14 days off.
The staff chaplain is responsible for the assessment of spiritual needs and the provision of spiritual care to patients, families and staff. Providing spiritual care involves a variety of interventions and competencies such as spiritual presence, active listening, spiritual guidance to include prayer, empathetic support,advocacy and resource for religious texts and/or rituals. Demonstrates competency in providing care to patients, families and staff, based on age, gender, spiritual or religious background and demonstrated needs. Reports to the Senior Director, Ambulatory Care with the responsibility to provide spiritual or religious assistance either directly or through coordination with other available Spiritual Care providers.

  • Accurately assesses patients', families' and staff's spiritual dimensions and/or religious needs in an effort to provide competent spiritual intervention to all age groups during times of illness, trauma and stress
  • Provides competent spiritual care and guidance to patients, families, and staff, addressing spiritual concerns in relation to their present health experiences
  • Offers timely and proficient spiritual intervention with patients, families and staff in times of urgent need such as trauma, crisis, and end of life; provides ongoing updates and supports the family; and documents spiritual intervention in the electronic medical record according to program guidelines
  • Completes descendent care protocol: encourages families to utilize their spiritual system and/or religious background in coping with the death of a patient; assists in completing all necessary paperwork or forms related to the death of a patient; offers spiritual presence and support to the hospital staff during their loss of the patient
  • Demonstrates competency in assisting patients, families and significant others with advanced care planning and other documents related to their healthcare (i.e. Advance Directives, Living Will, Designation of Healthcare Surrogate, etc.)
  • Participates in planning and/or facilitating programs for patients, families, and staff such as the Annual Memorial Service, family or staff support groups, or religious services
  • Demonstrates competency and personal comfort in working in an interfaith or ecumenical setting, with different lifestyles, cultures, beliefs and values
  • Assumes responsibility for continued professional development: demonstrates a working knowledge of current theory and practice of healthcare chaplaincy and integrates such information into practice
  • Consistently demonstrates the ability to maintain a healthy working relationship between the department of Spiritual Care and all other departments within the hospital; maximizes the strengths of an interdisciplinary health care team, and communicates clearly with other team members
  • Ability to network with community clergy and congregations to help families access their preferred religious or spiritual resources QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Masters degree or equivalent from an accredited college, university, seminary or school of Divinity or Theology
  • Ordination or commissioning by a recognized denomination or religious body, and endorsement for chaplaincy as a validated ministry
  • Certification by a professional chaplaincy organization or certification eligibility with the expectation of achieving certification within two (2) years of hire
  • 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) from an accredited healthcare institution
  • 1 year previous experience and knowledge within health care ministry including, but not limited to, areas such as the psychological and spiritul dimensions of illness, grief and loss, death and dying, family dynamics and interpersonal relationships
  • Demonstated ability to work well with people of diverse spiritual or religious backgrounds
  • Ability to understand and react effectively to the age specific needs unique to assigned patients
  • Current infant, child, and adult CPR and AED training, AHA PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    • __X__ Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance
    • __X__ Category 1: Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties
      • Works in all patient care areas of hospital and OCC's
      • Possible exposure to communicable disease when working in a healthcare setting
      • Exposure to sharp objects and insturments
      • Minimal exposure to hazardous materials
      • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure of electirc shock.
      • Occasional high noise level
